How to Reseal an Asphalt Cracks

Driveways should be recycled every 3-5 years. Many years later, your driveway begins to show significant cracks that will fill with water and destroy the driveway over time. Resealing the driveway adds a thin layer of asphalt to the top layer, closing any cracks beneath it.  Driveway resealing is not very expensive. Regular reselling usually adds 10 years to the life of a driveway. Although you can resell a driveway yourself, we always recommend contacting a professional to do this.  Resellers sold in home improvement stores are inferior to the ones used by professionals.

Asphalt resurfacing is the number one reason for you to take care of how well your driveway is installed in the first place.  If the gravel base of the driveway is properly installed, the driveway will never need to be rebuilt.  Instead, it can be revived every 15 years or so.  Re-surfacing involves tearing a few inches of asphalt and applying fresh asphalt on top.  Instead of applying an inch of new asphalt, resurfacing without the hassle and hassle of installing new ones makes the driveway look new.

Reseal an Asphalt Cracks:

  • Edge the driveway and remove any grass or dirt.
  • Make sure it’s draining properly so rainwater doesn’t pool on the driveway.
  • Clean the surface and any cracks with pressure washer.
  • Use stiff broom to remove any remaining dirt or debris.
  • Allow surface to dry.
  • Use a cold set asphalt repair patch material to fill any large cracks or holes and tamp it down.
  • Fill small cracks with asphalt crack repair material in a caulking tube or bottle applicator.
  • Apply a thin coat of paste patch material to pitted surfaces and allow it to set.
  • Apply an oil spot primer to oil stains so the sealer will adhere properly.
  • Allow the patching material to set.
  • Use drill attachment to stir sealer thoroughly.
  • Apply the sealer, starting from the high end of the driveway, and spread it out smooth with a squeegee.
  • Allow sealer to dry (5-6 hours), then apply a second coat if needed.
