Gravel Work by Asphalt Driveway
Good gravel road maintenance or rehabilitation depends on two basic principles- proper use of motorgraders (or other grading devices) and use of good surface gravel. The use of graders is more to give proper shape to the road, but the quality and quantity of gravel is not well understood as required. Most gravel is real when maintenance or rehabilitation problems are blamed on the grader operator. The problem of corrugation or washboarding is often thought to be caused by graders but it is primarily the material itself. Another important factor is the dramatic shift in vehicles and equipment, the use of small amounts of road. Trucks and agricultural equipment are increasing in size and horsepower. The impact of the largest and heaviest vehicles is well understood on our paved roads.
There is a need to build strong bases and sidewalks but the impact of gravel roads is just as serious and often not recognized. For this reason a part of the gravel road design has been included. The strength of the subgrade and the depth of material required to carry today’s heavy load must be considered. In addition, proper drainage system is also important. The final section of the manual covers innovations in the concrete road maintenance/ rehabilitation industry. In almost every case in this modern world change is constant and maintaining the gravel road is no exception.
There are new ways to stabilize roads, new dust control methods, new and different types of equipment available for maintenance, rehabilitation of gravel roads and even new surface materials such as recycled dams used. All of these innovations may or may not be available to every local government entity, but each of them is encouraged to take a purposeful approach. Gravel roads are then designed within a certain jurisdiction and an informed decision can be made about changes in the way of maintenance.
